1. Ihram
- Preparation: Before entering the state of Ihram, perform ghusl (full-body ritual purification), trim your nails, and remove any unwanted body hair.
- Clothing: Men wear two white, unstitched cloths (one for the lower body and one for the upper body). Women wear modest clothing that covers the entire body except for the face and hands.
- Intention (Niyyah): Make the intention to perform Umrah and recite the Talbiyah:
Labbayka Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Inna al-hamda wa-n-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.
(“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise, grace, and dominion are Yours, and You have no partner.”)
2. Tawaf
- Entering Masjid al-Haram: Upon entering the mosque, recite the Talbiyah and proceed to the Kaaba.
- Circumambulation: Perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise, starting from the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad). If possible, touch or kiss the Black Stone, or simply point towards it each time you pass.
- Prayers: After completing Tawaf, pray two Rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Abraham) if possible. Then, drink Zamzam water.
3. Sa’i
- Walking between Safa and Marwah: Proceed to the hills of Safa and Marwah. Begin at Safa, face the Kaaba, and make supplications. Walk to Marwah and repeat the process, completing seven circuits (each trip from Safa to Marwah is one circuit).
- Running: Men should run between the two green markers along the path.
4. Halq or Taqsir
- Shaving or Trimming Hair: Men should shave their heads (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women should cut a small portion of their hair (about the length of a fingertip).
Completion
Exiting Ihram: After cutting the hair, you can exit the state of Ihram. Your Umrah is now complete.
